An individual made nearly half a million dollars from wagers on the downfall of Nicolás Maduro just before it was officially announced, sparking debate about potential gains made from confidential information of American actions.

Market Movement in Wagers

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, an online prediction market, that the leader would be no longer in control by the end of January rose in the hours before Donald Trump declared on the weekend that the Venezuelan leader had been taken into custody.

A particular user, which became a member in December and placed four wagers, all on political events in Venezuela, made more than $436K from a initial bet of $32.5K.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. This unidentified trader had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Announcement

Trading information shows that participants assessed the probability of Maduro's exit at just 6.5% in the afternoon of the prior Friday.

However the odds had increased to 11% by the end of the day and spiked dramatically in the morning of Saturday, suggesting a rapid movement in betting activity just before the official statement was made.

"This specific wager has all the signs of a bet based on confidential knowledge," stated a financial reform advocate.

Several of other individuals also profited large payouts from predicting the capture.

Political Attention Grows

Elected officials are beginning to pay attention.

A new rule presented on the start of the week seeks to ban public officials from making trades on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a wager.

Industry Context

Prediction markets have surged in popularity in the past few years, with users able to bet on everything from sports to politics.

Prediction markets were examined under the previous administration. Yet it has found a more favorable environment during the present political climate.

Using confidential knowledge is illegal in the traditional financial markets, but there are fewer regulations in the prediction market space.

An official representative for another major platform said their site "has clear rules against trading on insider information of any form."
