Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for hours when numerous of them entered the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons containing numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves especially affected by weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that these practices become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
