Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opener Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments from captain Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in several conversations following England's loss in the second match of the Ashes against Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face a series loss with a match to spare, the captain stated he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

However, following the opener scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation after England suffered a loss in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The team subsequently went on a break to a Queensland resort between the second and third Tests.

Before this match, he revealed his players had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley stated the guidance from the captain and coach McCullum had stayed in line with their previous three years in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

The Hosts Close of Historic Series Victory

The opener's dismissal on day four came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left England 207-6 in pursuit of a notional total of 435.

This means, Australia need just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable three-nil lead after three Tests.

Defeat will extend England's drought in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes loss.

The current battle will be completed in just 11 days of play – after England fell the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably tough coming here against them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While the opener's innings in the third Test likely secures questions about his immediate place in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in the team's second innings on day four, extending his poor record versus the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and averages just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

However, Crawley said any suggestion Pope is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added he. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is talk externally. There is no discussion like that on Ollie in the camp," Crawley concluded.
