Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The ex-president was convicted of orchestrating a government overthrow in the ninth month and handed more than over two decades in jail, but he was staying under house arrest pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after fresh information emerged.

This included seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a public vigil that could facilitate a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a document approving the detention, the magistrate said data from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the former leader's "intention to break the surveillance device to ensure success in his flight.

This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His son, Flávio, who works as a senator, called for a gathering of his supporters near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on the previous day: Will you battle for your country, or observe everything from your phone there on your settee? I urge you to fight with us."

He said the gathering would be so backers could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the Top Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with tracking devices.

They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be permitted to depart his residence for medical treatment, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other health problems.

Context of Sentencing

He was determined responsible of orchestrating a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the presidential race to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he knew of a plot which included plans to assassinate Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been managing the former president's case.

The scheme was stopped because it couldn't obtain the support of the military leaders. Lula was took office without problem on 1 January 2023.

The security forces stepped in and around 1,500 people were arrested.

The justices found that the rioters had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to take action, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.

He was also banned from campaigning for office until 2060 - eight years after the completion of his term.

The one-time head of state called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him participating in the 2026 national vote.
